Would Oak Park be Oak Park without Tasty Dog?

Just how iconic can a hot dog place be?

Doesn’t hurt that the food is great or that residents still remember “saving” Tasty Dog from the ravages of development years ago. The “new” Tasty Dog features 14 framed pictures of early Oak Park, courtesy of the Oak Park and River Forest Historical Society. Among the snapshots is the “old” Tasty Dog, just across the street from the new shop.

Tasty Dog’s roots are also reflected in the Barton brothers – Mike and Rob. Mike’s worked at Tasty Dog since 1981. The brothers bought the place in 1994.

Where do you start with the food? Got to be with the word Vienna. The primo dog in Chicago is the only dog at Tasty Dog, which two years ago was named to Vienna Beef's Hot Dog Hall of Fame.

As always: add mustard, relish, onions, lettuce, tomatoes, cucumbers and kosher pickles. (Hot peppers optional.) What have you got? A salad on a bun. What does it cost? $2.42 with tax (Less if you use the Restaurant Month coupon.)

What’s the most you can spend on an item at Tasty Dog? The double rib-eye steak sandwich will set you back $5.45 plus tax. And don’t forget the corn dogs (listed as an appetizer), the fried shrimp (a basket of 20 to 25, with cocktail sauce) or the Chicken Italianata (a marinated breast). Insider’s tip: The Julienne Salad is a surprising treat.

The Bartons would tell you that if a customer is skipping the hot dog, they’re most likely ordering up a gyros. Three varieties: The Regular (yogurt sauce). Western (no sauce, but mozzarella). Chicken gyros (honey mustard sauce).

And since you’ve already enjoyed the gyros, OK, just go ahead and order the Oreo shake. It’s worth it.

Comment: Love it!! They really have the best turkey burger (on a wheat bun with all kinds of veggies on it - wow, my mouth is already watering) that I have ever had. And they have awesome tacos now, too. Really authentic ones. Everyone who tastes them says they are amazing. And now they serve breakfast - the real kind, not the prefab kind you get at McDonalds - with surprisingly great hash browns. They even have fruit cups. Really good food and a lot of variety, especially for a hot dog joint!

Comment: Tasty Dog has been our family favorite for years. It offers a great selection at reasonable prices. I love that I can now stop for breakfast on my way to work. My kids would go there everyday if they could. It's great to have the option of the drive thru on busy days. The inside is bright and clean. It seems I always run into a neighborhood friend when I'm there. A great Oak Park eatery!!

Comment: I remember stopping at Tasty Dog as a teenager (in the mid 80's) and having the best hot dog around! I'm proud to say Tasty Dog still delivers a perfect hot dog at an unbeatable price. The dining room was bright, the bathrooms were clean and the drive through was easy to navigate in my SUV. I appreciated having the choice of a salad or grilled chicken sandwich for those of us looking for a healthy alternative. Two thumbs way up for this Oak Park icon!

Comment: An Oak Park institution, Tasty Dog may be exaggerating a little by proclaiming itself as "The Healthy Way to Eat". It's an old standby and definitely a better substitute to the fast food chains. Prepare to be jabbed by teenager's elbows at lunchtime during the school year.

Comment: An Oak Park landmark which wasn't allowed to die when the original location was bought. Great burgers and cheese sticks. The only challenge is that second turn in the drive through!
